Why buy a typeface specially designed for street signs when you can just select one of the fontalicious beauties that came standard with Windows ’98?
Worcester’s DPW sign shop has the hots for Times New Roman, though we’ve caught them fooling around with other fonts on the side. Natick has fallen head-over-heels for Helvetica’s low-rent cousin Arial:

Something I’ve seen in some parts of Boston: street name carved into the curb for pedestrians. Nice.
I’ve never seen Arial Black signs before. Barnwell County, S.C. uses standard Arial for their new mixed case signs. This, after using all uppercase Helvetica from Thanksgiving Day 1997 to November 30, 2011.
